Robert Jahn was the consummate Shore local, according to Save Barnegat Bay director Willie deCamp. He’d lived on the ocean, on the bay, and in between. He loved taking pictures of the beautiful Ocean County landscape and, eventually, hoped to help save the bay that has supported communities in the area for hundreds of years.

In 2009, a a few decades of smoking helped put an end – far too early at the age of 62, his friends say – to all of that. But what started as a request to give a presentation at the Brick Township Historical Society's June 14 meeting brought back memories of Jahn – an accomplished author and storyteller – while helping to educate local residents about the bay he loved.

Well, this is one of those purchases that I agonized over for a while - mostly because of the 'softener'/descaler unit.There really isn't enough information out there to prove these work; but, in my case, I couldn't fit the whole house filter into my available space without trading my existing softener for this descaling unit at the same time.I also like the idea of not adding salt if the descaler really does work. Before installing this combination system we had a traditional salt water softener for the whole house and a reverse-osmosis filter at the kitchen sink.Both were installed when the house was built 7 1/2 years ago; so we don't have any scaling issues....

The installation was quite costly (ca $525) because of the piping needed to connect it to the main line and the labor that went into it.Additionally, we put in a couple of shut-off valves so that we could bypass the carbon filter and the pre-filter in case of leaks.Good thinking because the pre-filter/pipe connection did indeed leak after installation.The plumber could fix it without taking the whole thing apart and without leaving us cut off from the water supply.We also had to install a pressure reducer (our city water is at 95+ PSI, the filter system takes no more than 80) and a gauge.That's how we ended up with the $525 installation costs. So, overall we're very happy with the filter system, but it would be good if the Pelican folks were...
