its personal choice... i can't see it would harm the drink. Beer/soda cans havn't been shown to be hurt by being placed on their sides. there is a bit more pressure on the lower cans, but not enough to rupture unless the refridgerator was abnormally cold.
soda machines almost ALL have gravity feed systems with the cans stacked, and even with
